Understanding the Different Types of Paint Finishes

Understanding the different types of paint finishes is important when choosing the right paint for your project. Paint finishes, also known as sheens or lusters, determine the level of glossiness or shine of the dried paint surface, as well as its durability and suitability for different environments. Here are the five most common types of paint finishes and their pros and cons from Scholars Edge Painting:

Flat/Matte Finish

Flat or matte finishes have a non-reflective, velvety appearance with minimal to no shine. This finish conceals surface imperfections well, provides a smooth finish, and hides brush or roller marks. It is ideal for ceilings, walls with minor imperfections, and low-traffic areas. However, a flat or matte finish is less durable and less washable than other finishes. Therefore, it is not suitable for high-traffic areas or areas prone to moisture, as it can easily scuff or stain.

Eggshell Finish

Eggshell finishes have a slight sheen and a soft, subtle texture, similar to that of an eggshell. They offer a smooth finish with a low level of shine. This finish is more durable and washable than flat/matte finishes, making it suitable for living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways. However, it can highlight surface imperfections more than flat/matte finishes, and is therefore not as durable or washable as higher-gloss finishes.

Satin Finish

Satin finishes have a soft, velvety sheen with a slight glossiness. They provide a smooth, durable finish that is easy to clean and maintain. This finish is resistant to moisture, making it suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, and high-traffic areas. However, it may show brush or roller marks more than other finishes, and can therefore highlight surface imperfections, although less than higher-gloss finishes.

Semi-Gloss Finish

Semi-gloss finishes have a noticeable sheen and a moderate level of glossiness. It offers a durable, washable finish that is resistant to moisture, stains, and mildew. This finish is ideal for trim, doors, cabinets, and other high-traffic areas that require frequent cleaning. However, it can highlight surface imperfections and flaws and may require more effort to achieve a smooth, uniform finish.

Gloss Finish

Gloss finishes have a high level of shine and reflectivity, giving surfaces a polished, glossy appearance. It provides a highly durable, washable finish that is resistant to moisture, stains, and abrasion. It is therefore ideal for trim, doors, cabinets, and other surfaces that require maximum durability and shine. However, it can highlight surface imperfections, brush or roller marks, and flaws and also may require more preparation and effort to achieve a smooth finish.
